More than ten years ago, I made the decision to build my entire career around technology.
While most magicians occasionally use technology within a traditional act, I chose a different path. Every routine I perform involves technology in some way. Whether using my own devices or the mobile phones of audience members, technology is not simply a prop. It is the foundation of the performance.
This fascination with technology goes back many years. Viewers of Channel 4’s Freaky may remember my television magic involving television screens and digital technology.
As Arthur C Clarke famously observed:
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
Every night on stage, that idea becomes reality.
The First Humanoid Robot To Take Centre Stage
One of the most talked-about moments in the show happens when D4RYL walks onto the stage. D4RYL is a humanoid robot that forms a major part of the production and creates reactions unlike anything I have experienced in my career.
During one recent performance, an audience member spontaneously shouted “Oh my God!” the moment D4RYL connected with a volunteer from the audience.
The reaction was completely genuine.
